ตั้งอยู่นอกเกาะเมืองอยุธยาทางด้านทิศตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ กลางทุ่งภูเขาทอง ภายในวัดมีเจดีย์ย่อมุมขนาดใหญ่บนฐานประทักษิณเป็นประธาน ทางด้านทิศตะวันออกและทิศตะวันตกของพระเจดีย์เป็นพระวิหารและพระอุดโบสถตามลำดับ

พระราชพงศาวดารกรุงศรีอยุธยาระบุว่า สมเด็จพระรามเมศวรทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๑๙๓๐ ครั้นถึง พ.ศ.๒๑๑๒ พระเจ้าหงสาวดีบุเรงนองยกทัพเข้ามาตีกรุงศรีอยุธยาได้ จึงสร้างพระเจดีย์องค์ใหญ่ขึ้นเพื่อเป็นอนุสรณ์สถานถึงชัยชนะ ต่อมาสมเด็จพระเจ้าปราสาททอง ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้บูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์พระเจดีย์ประธาน และได้เปลี่ยนทรงเจดีย์เป็นเจดีย์ย่อมุมไม้สิบสอง ดังนั้นรูปแบบเดิมอย่างพม่าจึงเหลือเพียงส่วนฐานประทักษิณเท่านั้น ในสมัยพระเจ้าอยู่หัวบรมโกศทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ทำการบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์พระเจดีย์และพระอารามทั้งหมดอีกครั้ง

Wat Phu Khaa City Islando Thong means "Golden Mountain" located on the Northwest outside Ayutthaya City Island in the field name Thung Phu Khao Thong. The monastery consists of the huge square pagoda with rabbeted on the angle. On the east of the pagoda are the Ubosot and the Vihara on the west.

The Ayutthaya chronicle revealed that this monastery was established in the year 1387 A.D. by Kng Ramesuan and later in A.D. 156 when King Hongsawadee Burengnong of Burma defeated the Ayutthaya army; he had built a big pagoda in Burmese-Mon style to celebrate his victory.

In the reign of King Prasat Thong, it was restores and change into the rabbeted 12 angles pagoda as seen in the present but still left the foundation in the Burmese style. In the reign of King Boromakot the pagoda and all in this monastery was restored again.
